GENERAL

The becoming of the theoretical laboratory is most closely connected with the name of Yuri Borisovich Rumer. First, as Head of Technical Physics Department, West-Siberian Affiliated Branch of the USSR AS (since July, 1953) and then as Director of the Institute of Radioelectronics (IRE) (since November, 1957), Y.B. was specially focused on the casting of young physicists-theoreticians. At the same time, for young people inclined to deal with theoretical physics, - with Y.B., widely known for his contributions in the filed of quantum and static physics, being the author of intriguing "pentaoptics" coming to Novosibirsk, - the city became a powerful attraction centre.

In June 1964, IRE SB RAS and the Institute of Solid Physics SB RAS were integrated into the Institute of Semiconductor Physics. The point of solids was also respected by theoreticians earlier. But then, in new conditions, the semiconductor motive occurred in the activities of the laboratory and became more and more pronounced. The occurrence and a rapid process of MBE methods contributed to the development of thin-film technology in the Institute. Theoreticians were actively involved in a new field and, beginning with 1967, the dimensional quantization theory became one of the main trends of scientific activities.

In the period closer to the present, physics of low-dimensional systems passed on from homogeneous structures in the plane to structured objects which got their name of nanostructures (quantum wires, quantum dots, rings and their ensembles — artificial molecules and crystals). The staffers of the laboratory paid a fitting tribute to the development of these new trends. For the recent years, spintronic investigations have been and are being developed in the laboratory (electron spin control with electric fields) on electron properties theory of curve-line nanostructures.

The development of the theory of photogalvanic effect (PGE) in matters without inversion centre - and, later, the theory of quantum pumps originating from this field - is a special type of non-stationary phenomena accompanied by direct current (DC) without a dragging field - was an important stage in the activities of the laboratory. Also contributions in strongly correlated electron systems and electron phase transitions play a considerable role in scientific activities of the laboratory.
